Love brings people together. Throughout history, mankind has witnessed countless love stories that have changed the world forever. Whether politics, science or entertainment, every era produces couples who just find themselves on top of the world. Some of these love stories have happy endings. Others end tragically. Here are three of the most famous romantic couples in history.
Antony and CleopatraThe last Pharaon of Egypt, Cleopatra VII is one of the most brilliant, famous and beautiful women in history. She was very popular with the Egyptian people. After marrying her younger brother Ptolemy, she became the mistress of Julius Caesar, a Roman General. When Caesar died, another general, Antony set foot in Egypt to advance the power of Rome. Then, he fell in love with Cleopatra. However, their affair scandalized the Roman society and bothered many Roman politicians, who were very suspicious of the political power of Egypt. Albeit the risks, they married and planned to conquer Rome. In 31 BC however, the Roman general Octavian destroyed their forces. When Antony heard a false report that Cleopatra had died, he fell on his sword. When Cleopatra learned about his husband's death, she induced an asp to bite her. The glory of the Pharaonic rule in Egypt ended after 4000 years. Rome conquered Egypt. Octavian became the first Roman Emperor, which launched a new era.
Marie and Pierre CurieIf Antony and Cleopatra were the dashing couple in your History class, Marie and Pierre Curie are the hottest in the field of science and technology. Maria Sklodowska went to Paris to attend the Sorbonne in 1891 because the universities in Poland did not accept women then. Her path crossed that of Pierre Curie's, director of one of the laboratories she worked in. They got married in 1895 and began their world-famous partnership. In 1898, the couple discovered polonium and radium. In 1903, together with scientist Henri Becquerel, they also grabbed a Nobel Prize for Physics for the discovery of radioactivity. When her husband died in 1904, Marie promised to carry on their work and replaced him at the Sorbonne. In 1911, she became the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. She died of leukemia in 1934 after succesfully continuing the work and legacy that she and her husband Pierre started.
Brad Pitt and Angelina JolieFamous as Brangelina, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are Hollywood's hottest couple today. Always considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, Angelina Jolie is a model-turned-award-winning-actress. After being divorced twice, she met Brad Pitt while shooting the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt, who is often dubbed as the most beautiful man on the planet (Yes, life just isn't fair.) felt became incredibly close to Jolie. Rumors started to mushroom about the affair which sparked several scandals because back then, Pitt was still married to another famous celebrity, Jennifer Aniston. Although all parties claimed that the romance began after the divorce, the world was already addicted to following a potential love story even before the divorce. Since then, the sexy couple has been headlining countless magazines and entertainment news programs up to this day. Today, both Pitt and Jolie are admired not just for their sexy bodies and amazing movie performances, but also for their humanitarian efforts and the multi-cultural family they are raising.
