All About Love: Romantic Movies

One of the most popular types of films is the romantic film. While films almost always have some element of romance between characters, a romantic film or “romance film” can be defined as basically any film in which the premise of the story or the central plot revolves around the romance between the movie's protagonists.

Have you ever wondered why these films are so popular? The answer lies in the dramatic reality of the emotions that are expressed by the characters. This allows viewers to relate to the movie. Thus, the more people who can relate to it, the more profit for the producers. That's why the highest-grossing film of all time is a romance film --- Titanic. It collected more than $1.8 billion in total sales. But unlike Titanic, a typical romantic movie has a happy ending (or at the very least bittersweet).

Because any movie in which the central plot revolves around romance is a romance film, you can find romance films in any movie genre. These genres include romance drama, romance horror, romance musical and many others. But the most successful of all these types is the romantic comedy.

A romantic comedy is a movie with a light-hearted, humorous story that is centered around romantic ideas such as true love and destiny. This is a sub-genre of both romance films and comedy films. Proven to have strong appeal to women, romantic comedy movies are often dubbed “chick flicks.”

A romantic comedy's basic plot revolves around two people who meet and then part because of a certain conflict. The couple would then struggle to overcome all the obstacles they they encounter as they fix their relationship. Sometimes, the characters are not romantically involved initially. Thus the term boy-meets-girl. One of them almost always already has a partner. However, clues are everywhere suggesting that the two are attracted to each other or at least, would make a good couple.

Once the characters are separated, they would then realize that they are each other's Mr. or Ms. Perfect or that they are madly in love with each other. One of them would, then, make impressive efforts to find or get the other person and confess his/her affection. Then the film ends happily.
